Southern Smothered Chicken is a comforting dish that combines tender chicken with a rich, savory gravy and the smoky flavor of turkey bacon.

  • 4 pieces chicken thighs
  • 2 slices turkey bacon
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

  1. Season the chicken thighs with garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, and salt.
  2. In a large skillet, cook the turkey bacon until crispy. Remove and set aside.
  3. Add the seasoned chicken thighs to the skillet with the bacon drippings. Cook until browned on both sides.
  4. Remove the chicken and make a roux with flour and the remaining drippings.
  5. Slowly whisk in the chicken broth, stirring until the gravy thickens.
  6. Add the chicken back into the skillet, cover, and let simmer until cooked through.
  7. Top with crumbled turkey bacon before serving.

Notes

  • For a spicy kick, add cayenne pepper to the seasoning.
  • Serve with rice or mashed potatoes for a complete meal.
